When your Epson printer won’t scan documents, it can interrupt work just as much as printing problems. Scanning issues are usually caused by software conflicts, connection problems, driver errors, or incorrect settings rather than a faulty scanner. Understanding how the scanning process works between the printer and your computer helps you fix the issue more effectively.

Start by checking the basic connection between the printer and your computer. If you are using a USB connection, make sure the cable is securely connected at both ends and not damaged. Try a different USB port on your computer and avoid using USB hubs, as they can interfere with scanner communication. If your printer is connected over WiFi, confirm that both the printer and the computer are on the same network. Even a small network mismatch can prevent scanning while printing may still work.

Next, restart everything. Turn off the printer and your computer, then unplug the printer from the power source for a minute. Restart your computer first, then turn the printer back on. This simple step clears temporary glitches that can block the scanner from being detected.

Scanner problems are very often related to software. Check whether the Epson scanning software is installed and opening correctly on your computer. If the software fails to launch, freezes, or shows a communication error, it usually means the installation is corrupted or outdated. Uninstall the Epson scanner software completely, restart your system, and then reinstall the latest version designed for your exact printer model and operating system. Avoid using generic scanning apps during troubleshooting, as they may not fully support Epson scanners.

Drivers play a major role in scanning. Even if printing works, the scanner driver may be missing or damaged. Open your system’s device settings and confirm that the scanner appears without warning icons. If the scanner is missing or marked with an error, reinstalling the full Epson driver package is essential. Always choose the complete driver and utility installation rather than a basic or automatic driver.

Firewall and security software can also stop scanning. Scanning requires network communication, especially on WiFi printers, and security programs may block it without warning. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus or firewall software and try scanning again. If scanning works while security software is disabled, add the Epson scanning applications to the allowed or trusted list before re-enabling protection.

Check the printer’s control panel and scanning settings. Make sure the scanner is not displaying any error messages on its screen. Load the document correctly on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder, if available. Misplaced documents or open scanner lids can prevent scanning from starting. Close all covers firmly before trying again.

For network scanners, verify the scanner’s IP address. If the router has changed or the printer restarted, the scanner’s network address may have changed, breaking the connection with your computer. Running the Epson scanner utility to re-detect the printer on the network often fixes this issue. In some cases, removing and re-adding the printer and scanner in system settings helps refresh the connection.

Operating system updates are another common reason scanning suddenly stops working. After major Windows or macOS updates, older scanner drivers may lose compatibility. Reinstalling the Epson software after an update usually restores scanning functionality. Make sure your operating system is fully updated as well, since missing system components can also affect scanning.

If your printer scans but saves blank pages or incomplete images, clean the scanner glass and document feeder rollers. Dust, fingerprints, or streaks can interfere with the scanner sensors. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and avoid harsh cleaners. Also try scanning at a different resolution to rule out software glitches.

Firmware issues can also cause scanning failures. Firmware controls how the printer hardware interacts with software. If the firmware is outdated, scanning may become unstable or stop entirely. Checking for firmware updates using official instructions can improve scanning reliability and fix known bugs. Do not interrupt the printer during a firmware update, as this can cause additional problems.

If scanning fails from the computer but works directly from the printer’s control panel, the problem is almost certainly software-related on the computer. In this case, focus on reinstalling drivers, checking permissions, and reviewing security settings. On some systems, scanning permissions may need to be allowed explicitly, especially after system updates.

As a final test, try scanning from a different computer or using a different network. If scanning works elsewhere, the issue is isolated to the original system or network. If it fails everywhere, the scanner hardware may need professional inspection.

Most Epson scanning problems are fixable without replacing the printer. By checking connections, restarting devices, reinstalling drivers and scanning software, adjusting security settings, and keeping firmware updated, you can usually restore full scanning functionality and continue working without disruption.
